10 simple ways to save energy with your appliances!

|

1. Make sure that your refrigerator has a few inches of space behind it so air can circulate around the condenser coils. The appliance that uses the most energy is the refrigerator.
2. Dusty condenser coils cause your refrigerator to work harder, leading to higher bills, and a shorter life for the fridge. Clean them with a vacuum, duster, or a cleaner every three months to ensure it is running efficiently. If you have pets clean it every month. You can find vacuum attachments, dusters, and cleaner at AP Wagner
3. How cold is your refrigerator? Having it too cold can be a waste of energy. It is recommended that the temperature for the refrigerator is 37 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the freezer is 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Is your refrigerator full? A fuller fridge ensures the temperature is evenly distributed. If you have a lot of room in your refrigerator, fill some containers with water, and fill in the space. If that doesn't work, consider a smaller fridge.
5. Make sure your fridge gasket is clean and does not have any holes or cracks in it. The gasket's job is to keep the cold air in and the warm air out. If it is not working properly the refrigerator will work harder keeping the air cold, and thus lead to a larger energy bill.
6. Wash clothes in cold water if possible. Most of the energy used for machine-washing clothes goes to heating the water.
7. Is the lint screen on your dryer clean? A clogged lint screen makes the dryer use more energy. In addition to that it can also become a fire hazard.
8. Dry one load right after the other. This will reduce warm-up and drying times.
9. Set the fan on your central air conditioner to "on", rather then "auto". Doing this will circulate the air constantly, leading to a more evenly distributed temperature throughout the house.
10. Maintain your central air conditioner by cleaning the compressor with a garden hose. Make sure the power-flow is off before you do this.If your appliance is broken, don't replace it, visit AP Wagner for all your appliance part needs, and detailed repair help!

5 things you need to know about your refrigerator

|

  • Clean your coils!!! The coils under your refrigerator accumulate dust and dirt, making your refrigerator work harder. This can jack up your electricity bill. Clean your coils with a coil brush.

  • If you have a refrigerator that is less then 20 years old you can add an icemaker on if you don’t already have one.

  • As the defrost timer gets old, the motor that runs the defrost timer can begin to make noises as well. If the timer motor is making a loud sound, then you should replace the entire timer.

  • Using bleach or ammonia products to clean is not a good idea because the plastic parts inside the refrigerator can be damaged by them. Cleaning products with lemon scent are also not recommended as the odor from it can stay in the refrigerator for a very long time and may cause your foods to smell like lemons.

  • If your compressor is not shutting off when the temperature inside the refrigerator is cold enough, you may have a bad thermostat. You may also have the temperature set too high in the refrigerator. Try adjusting the thermostat to a lower temperature. If this turns the compressor off, you had it set too high. With the help of a refrigerator thermometer, you can find a more ideal setting that will keep your food cold, but not so cold that the compressor is always running. If raising the temperature setting doesn't help, it may be a problem with the thermostat and you will need to replace it.

How much does my refrigerator or freezer cost me each year to run?

|

Have you ever wondered how much it costs to run your refrigerator or freezer? Here’s your chance to find out thank to energystar.gov which has created an easy-to use refrigerator energy use calculator.

Before you calculate your costs, you will need to know a few things like the storage capacity of your refrigerator or freezer, model and approximate year. You will also need to know your state’s electricity price per kilowatt hour. Don’t worry, the site will help you figure that out or provide you with an “average” you can use.

If your current refrigerator was built before 1993, a new ENERGYSTAR refrigerator will require half as much energy to run, according to the ENERGYSTAR website. If your refrigerator is a 2001 model a new ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator will use 40% less energy than your 2001 model.

“Replacing a refrigerator bought in 1990 with a new ENERGY STAR qualified model would save enough energy to light the average household for nearly four months,” according to the energystar.gov.

Here are some things you can do to make sure you are saving as much money and energy from your current refrigerator.

  • Position your refrigerator away from heat sources such as your over, dishwasher or direct sunlight.
  • Make sure there is adequate space for the coils in order for them to properly cool. The coils are usually located on the back of a refrigerator.
  • Keep the condensing coils of your Frigidaire Refrigerator Parts clean.
  • Make sure all the refrigerator seal parts are tight and working properly. Replace any appliance parts that appear to be broken or worn out.
  • Keep your refrigerator between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit

And don’t forget about any old refrigerators or freezers in your garage or basement; follow the suggestions above for those freezer parts as well. Consider replacing or recycling fridges or freezers that are over 20 years old, as they require twice as much energy to run.

If you are interested in recycling your old appliance, the ENERGYSTAR website offers a number of ways to find appliance recycling programs on their website. Visit http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=recycle.pr_refrigerator_rec to read more about programs available through local utilities, retailers, scrap metal merchants and local municipalities.

Funny smell and smoke coming from a new oven

|

If you have purchased a new oven and noticed a strange odor or smoke the first time you turn your oven on, don’t worry, this is normal and will go away after the first use. According to this article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “Probably no harm in new oven's smell,” the smell is caused by “fiberglass insulation that contains a binding agent to hold it together.”

Appliance Company Frigidaire recommends turning on your new oven to 400 degree for 30 minutes to allow a “burn-in” time for your new Frigidaire oven. This allows any smoke or smells to be eliminated before you cook something in your oven. Be sure to open some windows to ventilate the room before doing so.

Other oven maintenance and baking tips:

  • Make sure to clean up any spills promptly. Something like tomato sauce, which is very acidic, can pit and corrode your oven drip pans and burner bowls. Purchase new stove parts if your drip pans are beyond cleaning.
  • In order to brown food the way you like it, set the oven to Bake, not Broil, and then use the right pan. First, shiny pans do not let food brown well, so if you want browned foods, use a darker pan.
  • Use the correct rack placement. Place the pan in the middle of the oven on the center rack to promote even heating.
  • If any parts of your oven need to be repaired or replaced, purchase the correct appliance parts from an online appliance parts store like APWagner.com in order to save money and to insure you are buying a quality part.
